2025 mural Festival Overview
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION
THROUGH PUBLIC ART!
Grand Rapids' first and only national mural festival Pleasant Peninsula is uniting artists nationwide in efforts to raise awareness for Michigan's unique ecological landscape through the radically accessible medium of public art. Our 2025 Mural Festival will showcase local, regional, and national artists as they install over 20 new murals in downtown Grand Rapids. Each mural will feature a different native species on the Michigan Endangered Species List!

highlighting ecosystems
Pleasant Peninsula exists to further conservation, biodiversity, and environmental education through public art. Our festival boosts visibility not only for artists, but for the nonhuman biodiversity found across our Great Lakes State. Every mural created for Pleasant Peninsula will feature a species on the Michigan Endangered Species List. By rendering these species in such a highly visible way, we provide our landscape both a voice and an audience.

MICHIGAN'S UNIQUE ECOLOGY
IN OUR CITY CENTER
─ 52 FRONT AVE UNDERPASS ─

Location Choice
This underpass is in close proximity to the river, GVSU, the Blue Bridge, and the GR Public Museum, lending the ecological content of these murals particular relevancy. By installing nature-themed murals in our city center, we aim to reach our neighbors who may not typically feel interested in exploring Michigan's natural beauty on their own.
Lasting Impact
Thanks to our detailed maintenance plan, these murals will last for years to come, bringing life to an underutilized but highly-trafficked walkway. With the strategic addition of seating, lighting, planters, and more, this underpass will be transformed from an abandoned bus stop to a safe, welcoming, and educational pedestrian destination.

HERE'S HOW WE'RE...
PLATFORMING OUR ARTISTS
At Pleasant Peninsula, we've worked with almost 100 unique Michigan artists and makers. We celebrate and showcase local talent, foster national artistic connections, and build lasting ties between artists, environmentalists, and neighborhoods.
We are redefining our city; not as a place of contest, but as one of mutual aid and artistic opporunity.
EXPANDING COMMUNITY ACCESS
Lack of representation, financial barriers, and limited accessibility in natural areas cause many to feel unwelcome in nature spaces.
Public art sparks interest in the natural world; from there, environmental education expands outdoor literacy.
Together, we aim to reach our neighbors who may not typically feel safe, welcome, or interested in exploring nature on their own.
SPEAKING FOR NATIVE ECOSYSTEMS
By highlighting native plants and wildlife in public art, we create opportunities for city-dwelling Michiganders to build personal, lasting relationships with the diverse species that share our Great Lake State.
Once a species is recognizable, it becomes special. Once a species can be named, it becomes a friend.
HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Pleasant Peninsula is funded by public grants, community fundraising, and by personal funds from our organizers. As we expand our reach to bring a national mural festival to Grand Rapids, we'll increasingly rely on large scale sponsorships and private donations.
Over 75% of our 2025 budget is allocated to artist compensation, accommodation, and installation. The remainder of our funds will go toward environmental programming, education initiatives, and festival fees like stage rental, event insurance, music, speakers, and permitting.
Pleasant Peninsula has involved almost 100 unique artists, environmentalists, and organizations in its 3 years of operation. We have drawn a combined 30,000 attendees to downtown Grand Rapids to celebrate ecology through art, illustrating year after year our community's enthusiasm for this initiative. As we embark on our most ambitious fundraising project yet, we thank you for your support of the arts and Michigan's incredible ecology.
